The Ohio University Women in Music Industry (WIMI) organization, along with Scripps and the School of Media Arts and Studies, are bringing Sharon Van Etten to campus for an interview, in which Van Etten will discuss her journey and how she has built a career on her own terms.

Van Etten is one of many artists this series has brought to OU, which also includes Jim Eno of Spoon and Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo. Josh Antonuccio, lecturer in the School of Media Arts & Studies and OU WIMI’s faculty advisor, made the connect to Van Etten. Antonuccio is looking forward to the conversation: “I’m excited about the partnership with OU WIMI, and the unique perspective that Sharon can bring as a female artist who has traversed stereotypes and expectations to build a career on her terms,” noted Antonuccio. “I’m hoping that students at Ohio University will gain insight and inspiration from Sharon’s journey and consider how to apply those lessons to their own aspirations beyond college.”

WIMI’s members have been promoting the event, as well as researching meaningful questions to ask Van Etten. Ellyn Loss, WIMI’s president, says that the event is not only important for women in the industry, but for men alike. “We have these awesome women speaking with us and inspiring the incredible females in our organization to achieve all of their professional goals,” she says. “But something that we have come to realize is that in order to make change, we need to invite the men of the music industry to learn about these incredible female professionals and the impact they have.”

Van Etten’s manager Zeke Hutchins will also be doing an Artist Management Q&A later in the day. Hutchins’s agency works with big names like Childish Gambino, Animal Collective, Of Monsters and Men, and Walk The Moon, and personally manages Leon Bridges and Deer Tick in addition to Sharon Van Etten.

Catch Van Etten’s onstage interview Friday, February 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Glidden Music Hall, or via live stream at mediaschool.ohio.edu. Hutchins’s Q&A is from 2 to 3 p.m. in Schoonover room 450. Both events are free and open to the public.
