The Smiling Skull / Fri., Dec. 11, 2015
Ladies and gentlefolk, put down the paper and pencil, recycle the flash cards and delete the files on your desktop! Finals week has met its end and the time for celebration is here. No more hours spent cramming in the library, or crying in bed, or begging professors to extend deadlines! The only thing left to do now is rehydrate and witness one of the wackier shows to grace the Smiling Skull, happening on Friday at 9 p.m.!
We know, we know; it’s a bold claim to announce the weirdest show the Skull has seen all semester. However, this lineup might genuinely take the proverbial cake. The Nico Missile, Psychic Wheels, Swirly in the Fryer and Nightstalker & Stardaddy are going to create an endless supply of frantic, high energy within the skull. There to soothe sure-to-be-exhausted attendees between sets is The Right Reverend Nicholas Littlehouse, and MC Warpaint will be providing some semblance of order to the disorder of the evening.
The Nico Missile and Swirly in the Fryer both hail from Cleveland, OH and Columbus is home to Psychic Wheels. Nightstalker & Stardaddy are Athens’ staples, and their set will include appearances from other Athenian musicians we all know and love--come out to see which familiar faces take to the stage!
Psychic Wheels have never had the pleasure of playing in Athens and, according to drummer Adam Scoppa, “Goodfella’s pizza will probably be our first stop if I have anything to say about it.” Though somewhat familiar with the town, Scoppa stated, “I don’t think any of us have been to the Smiling Skull so we’re looking forward to that especially.”
Scoppa remarked that the group hasn’t changed drastically since its inception in 2012. “We have added Adriana on keyboards and Tito has changed out guitars like five times . . . Stylistically we haven’t made a drastic change, but we’ve been exploring different avenues of our sound depending on what influences we’ve been discovering. Lately those have been more trashy protopunk and weird new wave, and also a lot of regional bands -- Black Planet, Mardou, Electric Eels, Ma Holos, Cheater Slicks, Bloody Show, so many more…”
Psychic Wheels are a huge proponent of The Nico Missile’s latest album, Big Red Button. The record is sure to be available for purchase at Friday’s show, and it’s never too late to add something great to your end of your list.
There’s sure to be plenty to talk about before, during and after this show. You don’t want to regret missing this eccentric gathering of creatives at the Skull on Friday, so bring $3 for entry and prepare to have your world rocked, reexamined and and debunked.
