Casa Nueva / Saturday, Oct. 3rd, 2015

This Saturday, Athens will be getting noticeably heavier, with a free metal show at Casa Nueva. The show will begin at 10 p.m. and will be capped off with a set from local metalcore group Watch Them Rot.

In September, Watch Them Rot played a similar show at Casa, with Dorothy, KLNZR and Druid also on the bill. For this go-round, the Athenian quintet will be sharing the stage with From Another Planet, Bless The Child, Under The Combine and Raum.

Making their way down to Athens is Chillicothe’s From Another Planet. This will be From Another Planet’s first show in Athens since Watch Them Rot’s CD release show in April 2014, and the band is excited to return.

“Every single time I’ve played in Athens, I’ve had a phenomenal time: everybody’s fun, supportive and out to have a good time,” vocalist Michael Leone said. Leone is looking forward to enjoying every second of his time in Athens, as he is also planning on camping out overnight, as well as hiking and climbing boulders while he’s in town.

In the time between appearances in Athens, the five-piece progressive metal act has been quite busy. This past summer, the group released its debut full-length, An Ever-Changing Perspective. “As a band, it’s taken us to new heights,” Leone said about the album. In addition, the band is fresh off the Summer of Shred tour with Extinction Level Event, which has been the largest tour the group has done so far.

A couple more bands, Bless The Child and Under The Combine, will be making the trip down by way of Columbus.

Bless The Child will be playing two consecutive shows leading up to Saturday, supporting Lorna Shore one day, and Fit For An Autopsy the next. After Saturday’s date in Athens, the band is heading to Pittsburgh to do a show with Suicide Silence.

For Under The Combine, this will be their first time in town, but the band is looking forward to their Athens debut. “We have been told that shows in Athens can get pretty rowdy, so we always like to see that,” bassist Mason Bischoff told ACRN.

Under The Combine has been busy at work, finishing up their debut full-length. In fact, the band will be debuting a new song titled “Wolves and Bottom Dwellers” this Saturday.

Additionally, Athens and Columbus-based group Raum will be unleashing its own brand of grind and hardcore chaos at Casa. Earlier this week, the band announced on its Facebook page that this will be the group’s first show with a bassist.

Many of these groups have shared the stage in the past, which has built a strong bond between the members of the bands. This bond is indicative of the strength of the Ohio metal scene. “Having been to tons of shows out of state, I can truly say that nobody’s local scene does it quite like we do,” Leone said. “Just about every band supports the other bands in the scene and everyone really wants to see the scene succeed as a whole, not just themselves,” Bischoff said.

If you’re in town for this three-day reading day weekend, head out to Casa Nueva on Saturday at 10 for some free metal madness.
