Rating: 2.5/5
Key Tracks: “Honeymoon,” “High By The Beach”
Lana Del Rey’s new album Honeymoon induces the listener into a dream-like state. Its elegant instrumentation and soft-spoken lyrics are as relaxing as a soak in a hot tub after a long day. At first listen, it’s questionable whether there is actually content in the music worth listening to, but Del Rey proves herself worthy once again.
The track that sets the album in motion is “Honeymoon.” The title track is introduced with an orchestra that sets the classy feel the entire album contains. Del Rey sings as smooth as the orchestra playing in the background, and softly enough to be the perfect… elevator music. Even though “Honeymoon” is composed beautifully, it is hard to deny the fact the anti-climactic song makes one doze off and miss that afternoon lecture.
“High By The Beach” is a more upbeat song on the album. The song is catchy and easily gets stuck in one’s head. The beat of the song is faster than “Honeymoon,” giving one less of a chance of falling asleep. Del Rey targets teenagers and college students in this song, pretty obviously. Considering the chorus consists of “All I want to do is get high by the beach,” I’d say it understands college students fairly well.
While it’s undeniable Lana Del Rey is moving up in the world of music, the music she writes is overrated. Without necessary emotion to convey meaning, the songs seem whiny rather than actually sad or whatever Del Rey is attempting to put out with her music. Props for Honeymoon’s instrumentation, but not for overall content in the album.
