Album Review: Widowspeak - All Yours

By Van Williams, Contributor

[Captured Tracks; 2015]

Rating: 4.5/5

Key Tracks: “Stoned,” “Borrowed World,” “All Yours”

In a time where a plethora of charming dreamy pop is being released, it is exceedingly difficult to find something that stands out. Widowspeak's new LP All Yours has no problem doing just that. Despite new elements the band is introducing, such as reverb ridden guitars and a far more shoegazey feel, this is still very finely done “dream country” music.

The record touches on loss, but not in a way that feels insincere or overdone. Molly Hamilton's vocals float through the record, delivered in a very detached way and making the listener feel like she has accepted any loss. The instrumental components of the record feel like a base, or a voice of their own that says forward progress is still being made.

Songs like “Coke Bottle Green” are immediately catchy with soft acoustic guitar melodies and chords that echo throughout with gentle chimes. “All Yours” and “Girls” feature strong rhythm sections from the help of the band Quilt, who contributed to the drums and bass sections of the album. This is a record I will definitely be coming back to again and again for long walks around campus, or just soft background music to play while new memories are being made.
