Preview: GlowDance / September 12 / Hobbit Hole

By Abbie Doyle, Editorial Director

Hobbit Hole / Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015

Are you feeling stuck in the routine of DIY? The same faces, the same vein of music, the same locations... It can start to feel like you’ve bought a great-fitting shirt in seven different colors. It’s tried and true, but maybe it wouldn’t hurt to try a new outfit--one that goes with poi and hoop spinning.

A-Town Roots Production, founded by Ryan Miller, has found a gold mine. Taking place in May, the Color Dance Music & Arts Festival, inspired by the Indian celebration Holi (Festival of colors), is an immensely popular event that showcases rock and roll musicians alongside local artists. The result is an incredibly fun and beautiful experience, which A-Town Roots thought Athens’ electronic fans would enjoy just as much.

Combine UV-reactive colored powder with black lights and swap 15-minute guitar solos for bass drops. The result is GlowDance, taking place this Saturday, September 12, at the Hobbit Hole (5 Elliott Street).

“Athens’ electronic scene is an ever-fluctuating entity, in my opinion,” says Kyle Rutherford, former Mobile Director at ACRN and current Public Relations specialist at A-Town Roots. In a town swimming with punks, hippies and Greek life, that’s not hard to conceive.

“[The electronic scene] was a bit bigger when I came to OU; there were more shows happening uptown. Now it has kind of moved back into house parties and basement shows. The popularity of the #FEST has helped keep it going, especially with The Union burning down since that was the main place any kind of electronic show would take place,” continued Rutherford, who is performing as Overwaves at GlowDance.

Athens-favorite Kashmerik is performing at GlowDance as well. The man behind the creative force, Cas Galiszewski (ACRN’s former Programming Director), is hopeful about the more active direction Athens’ electronic scene is taking. “It’s been nice to see the electronic music collective recently hold a show strictly devoted to electronic music... Something I’m really excited about is the student organization Electronic Emergence, run by Scandinavia Manion. I’m working with her to throw the first large-scale electronic event inside Baker Center. Athenian Vision is trying to host a rooftop revival rave in the next month or so.”

Galiszewski, who runs Athenian Vision, couldn’t be more gung-ho about GlowDance. “GlowDance will be showing a lot of people what we aim to keep bringing to Athens. [It will be] a great music experience that you can have fun and party at, as opposed to just a party that there's some music at.”

Headlining GlowDance is popular Dayton producer Yheti; other performers include Aludel (Cincinnati), DeadRomeo (Columbus) and local act Somadose. GlowDance starts at 3 p.m. and tickets are $15 at the door, $12 presale.
