Bunbury Music Festival: Day 2

By JC Griffith, Contributor

The second day of Bunbury had a more relaxed feel when compared to the day before. Crowds and lines were just as big, if not bigger. It was mostly country and bluegrass artists on Saturday--possibly because Bunbury's sister festival, Buckle Up Fest, a country music festival that happens the week after Bunbury, isn't happening this year? It does show some good diversity on Bunbury's part.

My day started with The Decemberists and their noisy indie folk. They played a good set, though I found it to be a little lackluster. They seemed unenthused and just played through their set, keeping it just entertaining enough. The same went for psychobilly band Reverend Horton Heat. Guitarist and front man Jim Heath is incredibly talented but seemed to get bored playing licks, like he just had to get through them. This was also good, though, because his playing looked incredibly natural, like it just flowed out of him.

Old Crow Medicine Show always puts on a great show and last night was no exception. Lots of energy was coming from the band and you could see it; many good ole' high kicks and spins were performed. The Avett Brothers closed day two with a great show. I initially was worried that they would have a full show and be standing at their places like many folk and bluegrass bands do, but they frequently moved around without missing a beat, often moving out past the monitors with their instruments, including a cello, towards the crowd. Day two turned out to be a nice, restful day after the first and has left me with plenty of energy for the last day!
