Just when you thought Athens couldn’t get any cooler, the town proves you wrong. This Saturday, March 28, is the first installment of southeastern Ohio’s Independent Fest. Put together by a group of Ohio University alumni called S.W.I.M. Team, Indie Fest is hosting a diverse collection of musicians, selecting partially from our local pool of artists as well as snagging an incredible headliner—Juicy J.

The musicians playing include Blond, Sweet Lil’, Uptowne Buddha, Atari Jones, Mojoflo, B-Funk, Yizzo, Dysfunktional Family, Cal Scruby, DJ Barticus and a slew of others. For these local bands—many of which have spoken to ACRN in the past—this is a tremendously exciting opportunity to show off their sounds to a massive audience.

One of the most exciting things about Indie Fest is its cause. Not only is this a fun and energetic celebration of art, a cut of the proceeds will be donated to those directly impacted by the devastating Union Street fire.

The mission of S.W.I.M. Team is simple—“strong will, independent mind.” This is a spirit especially celebrated in Athens, which houses countless local entrepreneurs, artists and enterprisers.

Indie Fest is located at Lake Snowden, and those interested can check out the fest’s website or stop by Mike’s Dog Shack for more information and/or tickets. Shuttles to and from Athens to the Lake will be provided, and tickets can also be purchased online.

If you attend Indie Fest, make sure to do a couple things: Be an active bystander, support your local artists (like Sweet Lil’, Blond, Yizzo, Dysfunktional Family, Dj Barticus, B-Funk) and have fun!
