Jackie O's / Saturday, February 21, 2015
On Saturday, the psychadelia that college towns are generally known for will be ramped up by three entertaining groups looking to experiment while jamming their hardest. Dallas Craft, a singer/songwriter right here from Athens, Ryan “Emcee” Schwartz from Dysfunktional Family and Electric Orange Peel are down for a great night full of vibes and new sounds at Jackie O's. I talked to Dylan Aughe from Electric Orange Feel to get their thoughts on the upcoming show.
In regards to playing in Athens, Aughe says, “We actually haven't played Athens yet, as we were scheduled to be at Jackie O's November 29, but then, of course, the fire happened. Athens has a reputation across the state as a hub of music culture so, obviously, we're really excited to be playing a new college town.” He compares it to Columbus by explaining, “We're really from the Ohio State campus city-within-a-city and three of us are alumni.”
Talking about the aspects of Electric Orange Peel, he described the band as being unique in their “approach to improvisation. Instead of jamming only being solos over fixed chord progressions, or adhering to strictly funk or dance music, we often jam thematically--longform suites completely rhythmically and modally improvised. Even though it is taking a risk on stage (and sometimes you swing and miss) ultimately it gives us a deep freedom of exploration on stage every time.” This allows total creative freedom and the energies that flow from there are very much explored in-depth.
He said with the show, “The audience can expect a set of original compositions spanning from klezmer, classical and middle-eastern to jamtronica, ambience, and bebop--often in a single piece. They can also expect a good deal of our set to be completely new and improvised in the moment just for them. Our music can be enjoyed equally by those who prefer to concentrate intently on our music as by those who simply want to dance with us. ”
Suffice it to say, Electric Orange Peel will be easily flanked by Dallas Craft and Ryan Schwartz given their easygoing nature and strong pursuit to musical endeavors both avant-garde and familiar to the human psyche. So, if you're looking for a concert that will not only bring one of a kind ideas and experiences to the table and stimulate your senses few other shows can, you need to visit Jackie O's on SagSaturdayFebruary 21 for an exceptional time.
