Jackie O's / Friday, November 14, 2014

ColorDance is bringing the comedy and music to Jackie O’s with their event, Clownin’ with ColorDance on Friday.

ColorDance hosts events that incorporate art and music into one setting. The Indian festival, Holi, influenced co-founders Ryan Miller and Arkopaul Sarkar to develop the company.

“We wanted to make our event unique, but not religious,” said Miller, “the colors represent unity and diversity.”

Art is a recurring theme at ColorDance events. Unlike May’s ColorDance Festival, Clownin’ will not incorporate color powder. Instead, face painting will take place. The show will also incorporate stand-up comedy performed by comedian Rich Grippa, who has performed at Donkey Coffee and other coffee shops across Athens.

“The event is lighthearted and jovial. The theme is for everyone to embrace their inner clown.”

Live music is another crucial component to ColorDance events. ColorDance Festival performers Glostik Willy and Baby Hands are reuniting for the night.

Muncie based Psych-jammers Glostik Willy just finished a twenty-show tour across Colorado, Alabama, Georgia and the east coast before finishing in Cincinnati last weekend.

“Ralf (Mowf, drummer) and I grew up on '80s rock,” said front man Jameson Bradford, “KISS was our first concert.”

The band’s early career started life as a more traditional rock band. “Seeing Humphrey McKee changed it all,” Jameson adds. Mowf and Bradford began recording hour-long jam sessions in their basement throughout high school.

Citing influences such as Primus, the Grateful Dead and Phish, one would expect members of the band to have strong progressive influences. At the same time though, these are also a strong influences for friend and fellow act, Baby Hands.

Sassafraz bassist Jake Goldberg was given the nickname “Baby Hands” by fellow band mate Jack Goldberg because of his small hands. Goldberg got to know Glostik Willy through performing at festivals with Sassafraz.

“I knew about them for a while. I saw them perform at different festivals,” said Goldberg, “I got to meet up with them and we talked. We started jamming individually.”

Glostik Willy and Baby Hands have been known for performing together as one act at past shows. Glostik Willy bassist, Zack “Buddah” Aguilar, switches over to guitar for the set. Goldberg said that it is possible that the two could join together again at Friday’s show.

Even though both acts are known for their jam concerts, there will be some structure in the set list.

“It’s unpredictable, but that’s what will keep it entertaining, the music could grab ears,” says Miller.

Fridays symbolize the end of a long, dreary week. Celebrate the beginning of the weekend with some live music, stand-up comedy, and face painting at Jackie O’s. The event starts at 9:30 P.M.
