Lobsterfest performers are reuniting tonight at The Smiling Skull for a night of woozy entertainment.
New England Patriots from Boston and their current tour partners, Columba Fasciata from Chicago, will be joining Sal Lake and RMG III. New England Patriots performed at the Skull last April for the Lobsterfest after show held in celebration of another successful year of the festival, and also for people to, well, bang their heads harder than they may have for Deerhoof.
New England Patriot’s website features a smiley face next to their tour date in Athens, Ohio, possibly indicating an excitement to return to the Saloon. The Skull will be the tenth stop on the band’s 14-date-long tour of the East Coast and Midwest. The band’s sound could be described as droney-punk but the most effective and solid adjective for its music is “loud.” The band has toured from Vermont to Cleveland to Chicago and onward to Iowa, Missouri and Michigan. Its style is particularly popular among members of the Athens DIY scene.
A google search of “Columba Fasciata” brings up five images of a beautiful blue pigeon and above it is the band’s sound cloud, filled with spunky female-fronted tunes. The band’s sound is extremely experimental as shown on the site. The band’s music video for “Wooden Eye” is incredibly spacey and captivating. You can watch below:
Sal Lake, an Athens staple, is performing tonight as well. His music is the epitome of experiment with the audience often never really hearing much repetition in his sets. Sal Lake is also an artist with his Senior thesis currently being held in the Trisolini Gallery on the fourth floor of Baker Center. The art features his noise work, guiding and creating a multi-sense experience for the viewer.
