Casa Nueva / November 6, 2014
Sometimes, after a long week, you just need to relax. You want to kick back and take it easy. Well, come Thursday, you can do that--or you can go to a show! Slated for Thursday, Athens’ own Casa Nueva has a night of some hypnotic psych, punk and indie planned. It is a superb way to kick the weekend off early. There are three tight, funky and musically diverse bands—and did I mention, IT’S FREE?!
First on the night is the musical odyssey that is Columbus’ Gelatinus Cube. Gelatinus Cube is best described as an adventure from start to finish. The band encompasses many different musical elements. They draw inspiration from country, surf, bluegrass, jazz and even noise. At first, it is next to impossible to peg this band into any one genre. These guys have a tight rhythm section that is bound to get a few heads nodding to start the night. Not only will these guys bring the rock, they’ll look damn good doing it. They bring an energetic and fun live show with seven band members, including a ska-like horn section. This stuff cannot be imagined, it is something you have to see for yourself. Words simply do Gelatinus Cube no justice.
Next on the night is another Columbus, Ohio-based band. This time, it’s Friendly Faux. Friendly Faux is a three-piece psych-punk band that plays material reminiscent of early Queens of the Stone Age. The three-piece is driven by the heavy, quaking, fuzzed-out bass that lays the foundation for all they play. They have a taste for old blues and don’t feel the need to overcomplicate things, as most of the songs are about groove and simple chord progressions. Friendly Faux’s taste for fuzz and vibes is sure to please the stoner in everyone.
Last on the night is Dune, an Athens-born group that is bringing back the sound of Nineties stoner rock. Dune is the Kyuss response to Friendly Faux’s Queen of the Stone Age sound. If the previous two artists don’t make the rafters shake, then Dune surely will. They bring an intense bass-heavy sound that would mesh perfectly with the Nineties Desert Scene in the west. These guys have played the Halloween block party, previously, and are bound to turn it up to 11.
Thursday night at Casa, all things considered, is what an old desert club show would have been like, circa 1991. The drone of heavy, fuzzy bass will ring into the night, after one of the most eclectic group of musicians in the area kicks the party off. The show is FREE! You can’t pass this up! Come rage!
