Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day. If you don’t, it’s alright. I’m still seeing a show at the Skull tonight.
Certainly, no amount of subpar weather could prevent anyone from coming to the ACRN show at the Smiling Skull tonight. Heck, you don’t even have an excuse considering two of the four bands traveled all the way from Germany (yes, that Germany) to entertain some music lovers at Athens’ favorite biker bar.
Those two German jammers mentioned are Jealousy Mountain Duo and Don Vito, who are clearly the best Germany has to offer in noisy instrumental music.
Jealousy Mountain Duo is, you guessed it, a duo signed to the experimental German label Blunoise Records. Their distinct sound combines post-modern jazz with indie math rock. Their self-titled album showcases this perfectly, mixing jazz drums with well-placed guitar rhythms and some slappin’ bass. “Roadkill” is one of the band’s catchier song with some killer looping of guitar and drum alike that will be sure to cause some head nodding at the Skull.
Don Vito is another instrumental band, but on the noisier side of rock. The trio goes pedal to the metal on every single song, each one feeling more aggressive and more exciting than the last. Their brand of heavy guitar and quick drumming will fill every inch of the Skull with sweat and intensity.
Joining the two German rock acts will be SIGN-OFF, another heavy rocking duo from Portsmouth, Ohio, and Knots, a post jazz indie duo from Columbus.
While this collection of instrumental bands may not have much to say on their songs, their music will speak plenty loud for the lot of them as they take the Skull by storm. Bring $4 to the door and you, too, can be apart of the noise.
