Saturday, October 4, 2014 / The Smiling Skull

With no classes Friday, everyone is gearing up for a long weekend in Athens. One thing you do not want to miss is the time machine of a show the Skull is hosting this Saturday. When you pay your three-buck cover and get your cheap beer, you’ll be ready to go back to what an old '80s punk show would have been like with We March, Hookers Made Out of Cocaine, Kill the Hippies and The D-Rays.

This blast from the past will start with Athens’ own The D-Rays. The D-Rays will drench you with vintage, instrumental surf rock jams. The band is driven by its rhythm section. Plus, former guitarist of classic punk rockers The Queers, Erick Coleman, will weave reverb-soaked guitar parts overtop.

Next on the night will be super shouty Cleveland punks Kill the Hippies. All that can be said about this group is that they mix the classic speed and power-chords of the hardcore punk of its classic California golden-age and then throw in a heavy dose of weirdness in ways that can best be described as New Wave-era idiosyncrasies.

Third on the night is Hookers Made Out of Cocaine (who also win the award for best band name, EVER!) These guys are old piss-and-vinegar, raucous, groovy punk rock. I had the opportunity to speak with bassist and co-vocalist--all three members sing--Donovan T. Roth.

“We’ve played the Union twice before,” commented Roth, “We sold a lot of records. The audiences were pretty responsive.”

Roth discussed how he and his bandmates have had a blast playing Athens in the past, whether it be with Hookers Made Out of Cocaine or previous bands. “Any given audience’s attention span is about 20 minutes, tops. Joel, our drummer, and I started HMOOC as a two-piece band and wanted to see how much music we could fit into a twenty minute set,” explained Roth.

He continues to say they are the kind of band that packs fifteen songs into that small 20-minute timeframe, no breaks.

When asked about the fourth band of the night, We March, Roth chimed, “They are amazing live. They kind of broke up a couple years ago…but they’ve played reunion shows here and there. Word around town is that this is their last show for a long time, if not indefinitely.”

We March is a band that should not be missed. They are mighty elusive and do not make a whole lot of live performances, as Roth stated. They are a modern take on the old-school hardcore sound of the Descendents and The Germs. This could be their last show ever, and from what’s been said, they put on a rager of a live show. Again, they should not be missed.

The Skull will be the place to throw-down come Saturday. It’s only a $3 cover at the door! Get into a pit. Let’s show them that punk’s not dead. In fact, it’s alive and well.
