Looking for four great bands but don't have the patience to walk to four different places? Stop by The Smiling Skull on Friday to send off February with Dweeb, Super High Way, Bloody Showand Weird Science.
You may have seen Athens natives Dweeb around other venues before, but Friday will be its first show at The Smiling Skull Saloon.
"We've played at The Union before and Arts/West", said drummer Eben Tobar. "We haven't played at the Smiling Skull. We've wanted to for a while."
Dweeb is relatively new to the Athens music scene, and is currently working on a demo to release soon. The band has released a few of its songs on its Soundcloud page, all of which were recorded in an unorthodox way.
"We recorded them with an iPhone," said bass player Michael Frame. "You have to wrap it with a t-shirt and put it in the corner in the room. It like, muffles the sound."
Their musical style can still be clearly heard on these recordings and at their live shows. Tobar describes the band's hard-edged psychedelic sound as "punk/funk/Sabbath".
"We also cover a Devo song "Gut Feeling" as a tribute to their guitar player," said guitarist Wyatt Moretti-Dobo. "We don't try to recreate their sound, but we do look up to them a lot."
Columbus band Bloody Show are also performing at Friday's show. Bass player and vocalist Elijah 'Jah Nada' has visited Athens plenty of times before and is looking forward to returning.
"I've always had fun out in Athens", said Nada. "There's great bands in Ohio. They'll play anywhere, share gear, lets people sleep on their floor. That's kinda the best part of the midwest music scene."
Bloody Show is a three-piece punk band that cites influences from classic punk acts like Bikini Kill.
"Bottom line is that we try to play simple and loud and just keep it like that," said Nada. "We've all been in bands that overthink shit and put too much thoughtfulness into it and not enough fun. We're just trying to maximize the fun factor."
Their five song F-13 Demo was just released in November, and the band is hard at work between touring creating a follow-up to that.
"We're working on a release coming out soon with Will Foster," said Nada. "We just wanna make sure that we all like it and it's something we'll enjoy listening to in the next ten years."
The show starts at 10 p.m. at The Smiling Skull Saloon, and it'll cost $3 to get in. There's no better way to start a new month than with a lot of great bands.
