Good Works Benefit with Nick Wilkinson & The Featured Players, Obstinate Orange, The Bellflowers / C

Perhaps the two most heart-warming things are charity and good music. On Friday, February 21, the two worlds will combine as bands will join forces to take on poverty and homelessness head on.

Nick Wilkinson & The Featured Players, hailing from Akron, Ohio, will bring their distinct style that combines the best of '90s rock with folk influences. The band, which started out as a joke according to the group's Facebook, has since released a 3-song EP entitled Nothing for Now and toured rigorously. They've come a long way from a quickly put together Battle of the Band participant and now they're bringing their sound to Athens.

Obstinate Orange is another band playing who clearly takes influences from '90s alternative pop rock with just a hint of blues and a whole lot of citrus. The independent Columbus band consists of four members and loves using its fruity name to the most of its potential. The band plays upbeat music that deals with quirky romances and "Pink Boots."

Rounding out the lineup is The Bellflowers, yet another fun-loving band ready to bring some entertainment to the stage. The Mentor residents typically dwell in the indie realm of music and use their guitars and pianos to construct catchy melodies. The four-piece is certain to be looking forward to taking the stage at Casa Nueva as opposed to playing in a bathroom again.

It's a good thing that three bands who know how to have fun with music are taking the stage on Friday, because the cause they're joining together to help out with is anything but a happy subject.

Good Works is hosting the event, and for those who don't know, the organization deals with helping the impoverished within the Appalachian community by feeding and housing them. This Saturday, the organization is hosting its annual Good Works Walk, where they try to raise awareness of homelessness and make money for their Timothy House, a shelter for the homeless in rural Athens.

All the proceeds from the show will go straight to the Good Works Walk. If you're interested in donating or signing up, feel free to check out their website for the event.

However, it will certainly be a fun show with entertaining live music that should appeal to everyone's ears and hearts alike.

The show is on Friday night and starts at 9 p.m. It costs a $3 cover charge, but it's well worth it.
